The Twitter Dilemma, Useful to Publish?
@wbaustin follows more than 100,000 people on Twitter. What are the chances that he will read your post? Without doing the math common sense says slim-to-none. So why do so many so-called expert Twitter users have the follow-me-and-I’ll-follow-you attitude? It seems to me that is off the mark and beyond the point, or in other words a waste of time.
As a newer user I have read quite a few articles and listened in on many Twitter conversations. I regrettably admit I initially added a bunch of people as followers with the sole purpose of getting followers. After being totally annoyed with the amount of repeated content from self-proclaimed social media gurus on my home page I unfollowed them. What happened next was exciting; I watched as the number of people I follow went down just as fast as the number of people who follow me went down. As soon as I stopped following so did they. This message was sent to one of my former friends “@dan_cote I’ve been told by @followermonitor that @jakeneeleypr stopped following you.” Needless to say @dan_cote does not follow me anymore.
It is easy to see that Twitter is effective and helpful when used right; so what is the best way to use Twitter? Let’s look at another example. Twitterholic.com is a site showing top Twitter users. Without looking deeply there is a trend among all top Twitter users; they have HUNDREDS more followers than they follow. Although there are some with triple digit friends not one user follows more than follow them. There are many arguments as to the reason behind their large followings but the point I am trying to make, CONTENT IS KING!
If you want Twitter followers then publish content that is interesting, or that people want to hear. Granted that you are not Oprah Winfrey, who could draw interest in tweeting about what she eats for breakfast, we all have something interesting to say that others will want to know; so be yourself and don’t worry how many followers you have!
Finally my advice, don’t waste your time trying to get followers but rather take the time to publish interesting content. The followers will come and then perhaps one day you can earn money doing it
